Concert Review: The Head And The Heart Unite At Summerstage

In a time where Light, as an entity and state of being, is dire, The Head And The Heart have delivered through their tour; The Signs of Light tour. Surrounded by people of all ages, creeds, and looks, a crowd sang in unison the hooks and harmonies of songs begging for harmony. Suddenly, the meaning of The Head And The Heart became redefined at Summerstage.

You know you have done an excellent concert if viewers have walked out with life epiphanies and hope. For me, I realized the meaning of their band’s name in a more spiritual level. Tracks like, “City of Angels”, “Sounds Like Hallelujah” , and “Down in the Valley” showed me that The Head And The Heart are things to connect. On one hand, your head or rather your mind help you process what your feelings, and can be tools to elevate what can be a combustion of sentiment. While, on the other hand, your heart is where your soul lives, and assures you that to be human is to feel, even if it means feeling bad sometimes. The “epiphany” hit me hard amongst the sing-alongs of the crowd that made me emotional. I am blessed to be a concert reviewer because music heals, and, in this world, we need a lot of healing. Amongst what feels like an apocalyptic news-cycle, The Head And The Heart turned Summerstage into a stress-relief center where their humming, stringed melodies and gospel-like choruses rang through everyone’s heads and hearts as if Jonathan Russell were an angel giving breath to our souls. There are moments when you realize how hardened you live out your days because that moment introduces you to the happiness you rarely feel or give into for what it is: simple. When The Head And The Heart unite in harmony, I wish I had a celestial sea-shell to capture their voices, and bring it with me everywhere. From “Ghosts” to “Rhythm & Blues” Jonathan Russell’s vocals gripped with a heaviness as if a cloud had landed upon you, but yet moved with a lightness as if that cloud only wished to cover you from darker spaces. How he balances his smoky voice with an airy quality is, in part, why their performance is so impressive. It as if he is the foundation for every chord, key, and harmony that layers upon to provide folkish lyricism on being human.

I’ll admit it. I got sentimental. I am a sap at heart, and The Head And The Heart are the concert you go to when you actually want to feel good about and hopeful for humanity. If you are open to optimism, they are a must-see. I know that is an odd recommendation, but, sometimes, we are not ready to be happy. Bitterness is still a companion even if he is a bad one, but The Head And The Heart are a band for those that want to feel like sweetness can be a companion too.
