Concert Review: Joywave Send Waves of Joy Through Summerstage Rain

I loved Joywave in concert. Their album, Content, is one of the best of the year for its blend of sheer fun and thoughtfulness over an electro-pop arrangement. Thus, I was incredibly excited to see them perform their newest tracks as Summerstage. Little did I know that I would become a full-on stan for Daniel Armbruster.

I LOVE Daniel Arnbruster. He is like the human embodiment of a fidget spinner. He is constantly tussling his hair or fingers as if to cast a spell over the crowd, which I kind of believe he would do. Not many lead singers introduce themselves with a line, “We Are Joywave! And we came to cast away the rain with our music!”. He might as well have speed-dialed Gandalf, my hero, to permanently banish cloudy days from NYC. Yet, that type of zest and humor brought a nerdy coolness to Armbruster. It was as if he could binge-watch Game of Thrones with you, and then go off to do a show with the Rolling Stones. He brought this simultaneous energy of a guy whom is fun on stage, but also can be your fun friend in life, which made him an unstoppable watch. He, in essence, brought out the rocker-nerd in all of us; the one that can look and act like he can scorch the earth with vocal and personal fire, and then go play a video-game. The notion  played into Joywave’s songs, “It’s a Trip!” , “Little Lies You’re Told”, and “Somebody New”, which are all about falling in and out of love, while knowing you were always yourself. Being authentic and being cool are hand in hand, and Joywave certainly felt like that, which the crowd loved.

Armbruster proved that to see him live is to gain the same pitch, note, or sentimental chord you loved in the album because he sounds exactly the same, which is a luxury. I truly enjoyed Joywave, and for such a brisk set they left me wanting more. There is nothing better, for an opener, to come in, and make the crowd eager to see them headline, which you can at Bowery Ballroom on November 14. Click Here For More Information On Joywave.
