Concert Review: Hiber Changes Their Chicago Sound At Pianos NYC
Hiber played Pianos NYC and showed that, sometimes, what goes wrong can prove what makes you right. Personally, I know the fear, panic, dread, and sheer annoyance that can happen when audio problems or set mistakes disrupt the fluidity of a scene. It can truly throw off your energy and focus, especially if it is consistent. As Hiber played through bad sound, the band proved their future has good music.
From the beginning, Hiber felt the audio was off, but after a few failed fixes… you just have to move forward. It happens all the time in shows, and I, myself, have had the pesky microphone issues or lighting flubs. Yet, what I admired about Hiber is that they did not let it deter them from introducing their new, electro sound. From “Slow Down”, “Sleepwalking”, and “Safety Net”, Hiber introduced new songs that were a different style for the Chicago band. It was a more electro-spiritual vibe that steered away from Hiber’s earlier light rock aura. Lead vocalist Danny Surico has a soulful voice that, though befitting for rock, truly splashes across the audience in a synth-backdrop. The band was giddy to introduce the new music from their new EP What You Wanted, which will be released later this spring. Moreover, they were excited to compliment and applaud the music production of bassist Yoo Soo Kim, who is steering Hiber and the vocals of Surico into a more modern realm. Initially, Hiber played some of their “original” originals, and Surico even played a heartfelt song he wrote for his wife, Angela, titled after her name. Yet, Soo Kim’s new sound pushes Surico to hit higher notes, and the band to add a moodiness to their instrumentals. A batch of already exceptional musicians; seeing them plays with R&B temperaments was exciting and amped up the crowd. If before their rock n’ roll dynamics aimed to swoon with love sonnets, their indie/ electro-rock aims to sway with social commentary. Hiber is ready to make a statement, from school violence to mind-numbing media plays, which is why you should see their show and lookout for their future music by Clicking Here.
