Concert Review: Hippo Campus Are Rock Stars At Terminal 5
Something is going on! From Alice Merton to Molly Burch, more and more artists are ascending to their inner stars. For all that I talk about time and honing your creativity into marketability, when you see it happen, it leaves you shook. At Terminal 5, Hippo Campus showed a PACKED!!!!!!!!!!! show that the most massively appealing aspect of you is your choice to be your most exuberant self.
When I interviewed Nightly, they mentioned a word/phrase that I kept on thinking with Hippo Campus: “we have become more “bandy”.” This phrase was in reference to how the years made Nightly more confident in themselves, in each other, and in their music to make the sound they have feel clearer to them. For Hippo Campus, their albums/ tours, from Landmark to Bambi, felt reigned over by their brotherhood and talent. At their prior show, they were like a bunch of cool, regular guys in awe of their growing listeners and how we understood them. Yet, at Terminal 5, it was as if they no longer questioned if the fans would come and feel their work. They knew they had us, and, in that, they had themselves.

I wish my words could suffice in describing how much Hippo Campus have, essentially, become ROCK STARS! While their music, especially on record, feels chill and unwinding, in concert, they become enlivening and danceable. Suddenly, headphone jams like, “Bambi,” “Bubbles,” and “Golden” have you moving and shaking enough to not be able to keep a pair on your head. Yet, this dynamic derives from how Hippo Campus stilled their presence across the stage with ownership, which, in a way, is what confidence is all about. While they still had their warm loyalty/ loveliness towards each other and their New York crowd, declaring how they never have a bad show here, they simply shone as musicians with so much more prosperity to gain.

I am SOOOO EXCITED for Hippo Campus’ future. From Jake Luppen’s crisp vocals that juiced and pressed notes as if he were picking them from an orchard to the bops and bounces of tracks such as, “Baseball” and “Western Kids,” the crowd was invested in Hippo Campus. They were reveling in their success; so much so that I could only imagine bigger arenas, more packed crowds, and better, succinct records in Hippo Campus’ future. Why? Because confidence is a realization that in keeping your power you will attract more to follow it. After all, name one time you invested in someone or something that did not believe in itself?
