Concert Review: CYN Does A Pop 360 At Terminal 5

When I first saw CYN, it was for an intimate, acoustic set that brought out the vulnerability of her music. For her, these were simple songs about growing up, and coming to the city to fulfill your dreams. Yet, at Terminal 5, the dream came true, and she was providing a pop factory of music.

From “Bubblebath” to “Believer,” CYN was introducing many tracks, and reintroducing the “pop version” to some I had heard like, “Holy Roller.” The experience made me wonder about how we create stars. In a world/ industry obsessed with authenticity, CYN was the same woman, giving the same tracks, and, technically, was doing the same thing from when I first met her: sing. Yet, the drastic difference was in presentation, and both versions were her, except they were a different side.
CYN – I’ll Still Have Me

We all have an inner superstar, but he or she cannot always dominate. We do need an occasional, intimate set to prep her/ him for a massive stage. In essence, our grounded self is the platform for our divine self/ pop star. The idea whirled in my head as CYN summoned every pop queen that has defined my life in stage and presence. From Britney Spears to Katy Perry, it was as if she had lit a candle to these pop saints, prayed, and then built her own Terminal 5 Temple. She even donned their aesthetic wearing a puffed up, red jack that made her look like The Red Riding Hood of Pop, and allowed her to transform verse that were, initially, about figuring herself out into sonic fairytales.
CYN – Only With You

I always say there is a lot more richness to pop music than what it is accredited for. We often focus on the sounds rather than lyrics, but, if you take the time, you might be surprised what depth lies beneath the rhythm. Still, when it comes to voice, from “Terrible Ideas” to “Only With You,” her voice felt fluffed and fleeced with Downy like, her vocals are freshly washed before she strikes a fashionable performance. As I kept on going back to her acoustic set, I felt impressed that she had levels to her talent. It is as if she has a switch, she turns on and turns down at her own liking and to her growing fanbase’s pleasure. For More Information On Cyn Click Here.
