Concert Review: HXXS Go Coven In Sultan Room
Watching HXXS, I had NO IDEA or, at least, did not fully realize their “occultish” vibe. At Sultan Room, I felt like Chance The Rapper walking into AHS:Coven and thinking, “Yeah, I forgot my rosary and holy water!” (lol!) Sometimes, I forget that in the world of beyond, it is not just about God and The Evil One. The idea of the witch makes humanity feel like a third player in the game of universal power, which is exactly HXXS.
“Witches” have pervaded through human history to take many forms; she has gone from healer to demon to, eventually, Jessica Lange in any Ryan Murphy series. At HXXS’ show, I can honestly say I never thought of “witchy vibes” as a plight for equality. Of course, HXXS was not reciting the Bill of Rights over reverb, but part of their “magic” is that they play to the outcast looking to be seen as a power player. The alienated guy or gal who does not want to be seen as a threat or even worse, to them, not seen at all.

For some, they rather be identified as a “kick-ass” or disruptor then just another “invisible,” of which HXXS understand the feeling. From “Learner” to “Seppuku,” their music embodied that part of our attraction to witches is that they always have a spell to clear their doubt and get their desire. They work outside systems that do not work for them, which is an attractive concept to Millennials. Playing off their record, Year of the Witch, their glitch pop treated synth-waves like they sprouted from the bark of a tree. Suddenly the most digitized sound became earthy and, in a way, cosmic.

Lyrically, HXXS’ songs show that if you are human being growing your presence you are the same as a star growing your light. Yes, I know I spent 99% of this article talking about their occultist vibes, of which the dim lighting of their late night show, making Jeannie Colleene and Gavin Neves appear like shadows using their music and vocals for clarity. Thus, as they hovered over their mics and machines to screech and sing the struggles of living, I realized the top reason a witch casts a spell…. to get better or, at least, get their idea of better.
