Concert Review: Relationship Advice According To India Shawn
I’m very chill or, at least, I want to be. I want to lie in love like one would under sun; simply absorbing its rays as if its light did not only glow my skin…. it glowed my being. For me, that is what Female R&B is all about; allowing Love’s Sun to “bake” you. You can hear the difference in between male R&B, a la my Tone Stith review and female. The former is the “seducer” while the latter is the “sensor” or the one that feels what love can receive versus planning what it can give. Yet, both are irrevocably bound, and, at Warsaw, India Shawn played her new EP, Before We Go, to solidify you can not give love without receiving it.
It feels so simple. You have to receive love to give it. How you mold your relationships is molded on how you love yourself, have been loved by others, and have been taught how such things influence them. India Shawn handles those lessons with grace and delicacy; approaching the stage with an ownership that your fave teacher would have. She is not here to make you regurgitate life’s lessons on romance; she is here to make you sing on the gifts of growth a good love can give you. In a way, I had almost forgotten that love makes you grow.
Is that silly? It seems so natural that you forget; enjoying someone can make you a better person. The way India smiled, sang, and swayed across that stage as if Cupid’s Arrow does not hurt once struck made her the living symbol that love is good. It was like she had tattooed that Corinthians quote, “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. … Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” Having that “glow” is what makes her destined to be on loop in the R&B world: with Summer Walker, Jhene Aiko, Kehlani and H.E.R. These queens understand love is supposed to make you happy, and, despite all the heartbreak, it supposed to be fun enough to make your try for it again.
