Concert Review: Island Debut As Headliners At Baby’s All Right

Is it weird to say that you could feel it was Island’s first time headlining a tour? The sentiment had nothing to do with professionalism or musicianship. These guys could play perfection even on broken guitars, which happened. Yet, at Baby’s All Right, there was a childlike joy to their approach to the stage and their music that screamed, “Debut!”

Maybe, the world is jaded because you can tell when someone is in their “beginning” versus when someone is in their customary.  Though thy have been making music for awhile, they are on the “come up,” and Island’s boyish exuberance reminded me of a bunch of kids riding their bikes, tossing rocks into the river, and truly believing life was made for moments like these; when it was all about being present. Still, from “Try” to “The Day I Die,” their songs sung to the efforts we make for greater goals, and Rollo Doherty has a voice that pull a truck with a jumprope. He rakes and razors his voice to show efforts are both frustrating and fun.  ISLAND – The Day I Die (Official Video)

Watching Island turn to each other to play their guitars or bash and bang their heads to their own melodies reminded of the “garageband’ days; when you could summon arena dreams while jamming next to your parent’s parked car. Sometimes, the bigness of a moment does not come through its literal size but your figurative perspective and hope. To the UK band, performing in New York, was a big deal, especially because they were playing off their debut album, Feels Like Air.  Thus, the night was defined by first steps, and packed with a crowd ready to take them with the band.

Do I foresee Island reaching massive heights of success? Most definitely! I felt like I was watching Tame Impala or Coldplay before the stardom. While Island, at best similarity, is a cross between both group’s sounds, the comparison lies in feeling like you are seeing the world’s next favorite band before the it does. Hence, the playfulness between them and the crowd felt intimate, and the way their every song felt so warm and genuine to their being: like a pie just leaving the oven. They truly are what bands have always been: a bunch of friends playing together. For More Information On Island Click Here.
