Concert Review: Jessie Reyez Asks How Do You Stay Pure?
“How do you stay pure? How do you hold onto your soul?” asked Jessie Reyez to a warehouse of people that love her, as an artists, BECAUSE she asks these questions. In a world where people sing to having a good life, Jessie Reyez refreshing because she sings to being a good person and that matters. There are people who make their heart being good equal to feeling or even looking good, and Reyes Brooklyn Steel show was for them.
The way she asked these questions was a turning point for the show. Entering the stage in a straight-jacket, it is clear that Reyez, like most of us, feels crazy. We make money, fame, and all material things goals and markers for happiness. We even make our relationships, especially how many we have or how long they last, a measurer for our joy. Yet, Reyez announced her spiritual transition, as someone working to love herself, which is not only necessary for life but feels urgent to it.
Reyez was like living sage; performing her songs with a deeper, soulful clarity that made even classics like, “Apple Juice” feel like they were rising from an old haze. In a way, she felt more purposeful like, she was about to drop her own “Jesus Is King” record and it would ACTUALLY be on its set, release date. (lol!) Yet, what was so great about her increasing openness to be philosophical and empowering is that people want that. Now more than ever, “cookie-cutter” is not the prime selection for people in music. Sure, we all need a pop diva to glamorize, but we also need someone to sing us through the gutter and makes us feel like those who move with their heart are pretty glam.
