Concert Review: Gavin Turek Is A Pure Entertainer

Coming out in a full-on Whitney Houston, shiny glam cape, Gavin Turek was giving me “The Greatest Entertainer” vibes. From Diana Ross’ soft, “dreamgirl” high notes to Tina Turner dance moves, Turek was summoning the spirit of every acclaimed, black songstress of the 20th century. As she said, “I am a proud, beautiful black woman,” and she was fiercely homaging the many that came before.

With her lush fro waving in the wind, Turek was representing for women of color, and proving to every woman dreaming of being an artist that being a diva is an honor/ necessity. In this world, women have to be fierce, especially when of color. We have to double up our natural magnificence to assure the light we have stays blinding: not simply shining. This was the thought I felt as Turek sang tracks like, “The Distance”, “Frontline”, and “My Delight.” She was giving me Donna Summer: Queen of Disco blended with the vocal playfulness of Chaka Khan.

It is hard work to be fabulous, and Divas take on that work with grace. For all Turek’s dance moves, that seemed inspired by bomba y plenas, she did not seem to break e sweat. She would go from high kicking and arm swinging into a gentle, “How you feeling tonight! You all ready for Hayley!” It was as if she was the entertainment epitome of a hostess; making sure the crowd stayed hyped for Ms.Kiyoko, of which the audience insisted she be called “Lesbian Jesus!” Still, Turek STOLE THAT CROWD’S HEART! Basically, Turek was a phoenix combusting with fiery rhythms and a feeling that she is surreal in her capacity to enlighten a crowd.

With how loud everyone cheered for Turek during her moves and vocal high notes, I thought she was headlining. From going into the crowd to sing or wistfully displaying her aerial vocality like she was Selena singing “Como Una Flor”, the fact that I kept on thinking of all the divas/ acclaimed women of color that sang before Turek, to me, meant that she was next in line to take a crown and royally represent. With her precise, glamorous use of her presence and voice, she will, certainly, be apart of our new generation of divas. For More Information On Gavin Turek Click Here.
