Concert Review: Stay Woke On Jordan Mackampa
Prior to seeing Jordan Mackampa, I had heard he was really good. At Warsaw, he blesses the entire audience with feeling; giving a performance that centered around the one thing in life that make us soar to Heaven or feel like Jesus is stepping on us like a crispy creme left on the floor. This one thing is our hearts.
Do I believe Jordan Mackampa will become a household name…. YES! Because from Adele to Leon Bridges, there are certain artists that could, literally, make a song that repeats “Hello” feel like your heart might say goodbye to your body. They tap into SOUL by helping your remember you have one. From “What Am I” to “Parachutes,” Mackampa is aligning with other rising, Springsteen inspired rockers, like Sam Fender and Cautious Clay, who have this innate gift of making life feel as frenetically beautiful as a Coltrane jazz record. They keep their lyrics succinct and nourishing to anyone that has tried to figure out themselves while deciding to love others.
Jordan Mackampa – What Am I (Official Video)
Mackampa’s presence is sweet and easily endearing. He emanates warmth, through cracked jokes and perfect pitches, to deliver a show that tells you it is okay to be normal, and normal is, usually, not “okay.” Everyone is a big pile of eccentricities, and the day you realize that you are weird, occasionally inconsistent, and that life has to go wrong in the same way it has to go right, you will be fine. The journey is meant to be jagged and jilting in joy, and Mackampa’s music emanates that, which is why the crowd soaked him in like his voice was free soup being passed around. Instead of applauses, he might as well have gotten a series of “THANK YOU’s.”
Jordan Mackampa – Saint | Mahogany Session
I can totally see Mackampa filling out venues in the near future because the music scene is becoming divided between those that go for the soul and those that go for the stratosphere; in essence, those that speak to being regular to those eager to be treated like royalty. Believe it or not, some people don’t want the latter. In a generation that does not know if “woke” is activism, hypocrisy, or both, Mackampa sings for those that just want to relish in the sweetness of being alive and awake.
