Concert Review: Larkin Poe Confront Demons At Bowery Ballroom

Larkin Poe gave a show that was so badass, I almost texted The Devil and said, “Meet me in the parking lot! I am kicking your BUTT!” Imagine being able to feel so tough you told the evil of this world to LEAVE; not only is it banished from Heaven, but it is no longer has a place in your home. At Bowery Ballroom, the duo played to this continuous, human dream, but we struggle to get rid of the evil around us because it is also within us.

As Rebecca Lovell spoke to the strangeness of negativity, the entire crowd felt a common-ground being built under them. She was open about how she has has a great, loving life; filled with friends and family that have told her she is beautiful, talented, bold, and deserves everything that is good. Yet, she spoke about that gnawing, little voice always telling her, “They are lying!” In this story, she marked the definition of Venom & Faith. This album shows how we either poison ourselves with stress or prosper ourselves with self-faith. Thus, it is no wonder Larkin Poe’s rock n’ roll stomped, stampeded, and stared self-loathing in its dirty face.

Larkin Poe’s guitar melodies were ANTHEMIC! Tracks such as, “Blue Ridge Mountains,” “Bleach Blonde Bottle Blues,” “Preachin Blues,”and “Honey Honey” pounced baselines and synths like they were the boots of Heaven marching into Hell. The dynamic felt spiritually rising to everyone’s inner warrior, and amplified that Rebecca Lovell’s richly, stirring voice and Megan’s gut-busting guitar playing can turn anyone into their own soldier. For them, self-love is self-defense, and the lack of the distinguish between the two is invigorating. Loving yourself is not just about seeing your greatness, but assuring that others do not see it before or try to take it from you.

Perhaps, the most sentimental and poignant song you will hear in a Larkin Poe concert is “Mad As A Hatter.” Written for their schizophrenic grandfather, the song embodies and relates to anyone that has felt mentally unclear. At least once, in your life, your mental health will feel challenged. You will want to curl up in a fetal position, and let life continue to hit your dreams/heart. Thus, I suggest, in that moment, you whip out some Larkin Poe, and tell that negativity to GET OUT! For More Information on Larkin Poe Click Here.
