Concert Review: Lennon Stella PACKS OUT Mercury Lounge
Frankly, never in the history of Mercury Lounge, have I seen it so packed to see someone. The doors were, literally, open to the back-bar because there were so many people eager to catch a glimpse on the much buzzed about, rising artist: Lennon Stella. The anticipation of seeing the young singer was exciting, and amplified the feeling that we were watching someone on the cusp of even greater heights.
Part of our attraction to artists is that they exemplify and go off to live a life, most of us, would dream. Around 99% of us will never say we dropped a hit single with Liam Payne, or are about to headline our own tour nationally and, eventually, abroad. Lennon Stella could say both, which gave her an added giddiness that layered her rather calm, inviting nature. She was in awe of the experience at hand, but, after hearing her live, I could see her tour continuing to sell out.
There is an airy magic to Lennon Stella’s vocality. She sings her lyrics as if in wonder of them, which gave songs with just her and her guitar a particular coat of whimsical. From “Bad” to “La Di Da,” I realized the potential power of Lennon Stella is that she can give you a synth-pop banger and a cool, “in your feelings” acoustic track, of which we need both. I am convinced that, at times, why some artists denote other genres or fellow musicians is because they cannot do what they do or expand themselves into other lanes. Yet, Lennon Stella can! She can make you twerk or think, but, either way, she keeps you moving with pop romanticism, and this ability gives her career as much a chance to longevity as to prosperity.
Throughout tracks such as, “Polaroid,” “Like Everybody Else,” and “Breakaway,” you got the feeling that Stella’s voice can rile up a concert crowd as much an individual with a simple headphone. She was interpersonal enough, especially when her beloved sister, Maisy, came out, to make everyone feel connected to her, but powerful enough to make them feel connected to each other. Lennon Stella has both the voice and the motivation to make her fans into a community, which is why everyone from Ariana Grande to Camila Cabello, have such a following.
