Concert Review: Lily Kershaw Embraces The Love At Gramercy

Lily Kershaw is one of my favorite, new artists because she is an excellent human being, and, frankly, this world/ industry needs that. Her heart went into her performance and songs to make a crowd, that included her beloved grandma, be okay with being okay. Trust me, this is no easy feat.

Just before her performance, a friend had called me for life advice because I am the person that gives powerful wisdom to others without giving it to herself. #whatisupwiththat Yet, this dynamic thrives through Lily’s “lifelorn” songs. Yes, I said “lifelorn” because, nowadays, people are not just nostalgic for the powerful love that has yet to show up. They feel like they are missing the fantastic life that has yet to pop in for an appearance. For all that we love each other and help to life others up, somehow, we can still feel sunken, and Lily Kershaw’s bright personality but soft songs for your inner sad tapped into that beautifully.

Lily Kershaw – “Now & Then”

In my call to my friend, I told her, “Your situation won’t, necessarily, change because you change your approach to it.” In essence, you don’t, suddenly, walk from your wheelchair just because you accepted you are in one, or you don’t instantly win the lotto because you decide you are going to try to be happy while being broke. This reality is not often approached in song or truth, but Lily sings to the reasons why. We really think there is a recipe for happy, and the truth is it a state of being, of which her voice flutters like a butterfly trying to find it cocoon of joy.

Lily Kershaw – “The Sea” (feat. Jon Bryant)

Lily’s voice feels like the warm, scented, but light smoke that comes from hot cocoa just as it is being poured; all you want to do is drink in her vocals knowing it is going to taste so good and heat up your soul from the outside cold. Kershaw’s ability to be kind, funny, and understanding helped the crowd be enveloped by her unabashedly delicate, heartfelt songs; each with simple chords on the key and guitar, allowing her verses, and the virtues behind them, to shine as their power.
