Album Review: Lily Allen Has “No Shame” And You Love It

In Lily Allen‘s No Shame breakdowns, breakups, and breakthroughs are lyrically abound. It is for this reason fans are going to ADORE No Shame; you are going to want to call Allen, and say, “Hon, I understand! Nobody is perfect!’ Yet, No Shame was written by a woman trying to be good.

The album begins with tracks like “Your Choice (Feat Burna Boy)”, “Trigger Bang (Feat Giggs)”, “Family Man”, and “Lost My Mind”, which are dedicated to the decline of Lily’s relationships with both her husband and herself. With mental health rising as an important topic, her verses pour into rhythms that feel made for the tropics but burn like a sun filled with truth. I am obsessed with Lily’s fusions of R&B, electro, and trop-pop in this album. From “Higher” to “Waste (Feat. Lady Chann)”, the rhythms bop you to the dance-floor as if you are heading to to a beach party. Thus, you have to listen a few times before you get to the meat of songs.

“Everything To Feel Something” and “Pushing Up Daisies” are examples of Lilly Allen’s “Weeknd Effect; which is what I call the power of artists that can make you dance to songs that you realize, later, were much darker or deeper in meaning. It feels as if Allen has used No Shame as an emotional purge; a measurer of how much she has grown and wants to, which is exciting. Her music before like “Smile” and “F**k You”, though infectious, thoughtful, and fun, spoke about “others” being the problem. Yet. No Shame is about Lily Allen being the problem and resolution for herself.

“Apples”, “My One”, and “Cake” are all tracks that show Lily still has her vulnerabilities but is finding more love in her life through her kids, her new man, and herself. Thus, No Shame, inadvertently, becomes a dancing, sonic path to mental clarity. Through Allen’s truths you will learn the darkest rut of self-loathing can be climbed to achieve self-love. Yet, self-love is not just about celebrating and claiming you are great; that is not always about possible. It is about being open and receiving those that genuinely think you are.
