Concert Review: Love Fame Tragedy STRIKE Mercury Lounge

Can one man be LOVE FAME TRAGEDY!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is such a perfect name for an artist because it is literary. These three words, especially together, ignite a vision, which is exactly what Matthew “Murph” Murphy, guitarist and lead singer of indie pop trio The Wombats, wanted to do at Mercury Lounge.

Similar to Brittany Howard’s break from Alabama Shakes, it is easy to wonder why Murph is going solo. He is the voice of The Wombats: the most recognized face to a group that sings to self-awareness. Hence, to an outsider, why go “solo”? At Mercury Lounge, he showed that is not so much about separating from your band as much as needing to come into your own. For the charismatic frontman, Love Fame Tragedy was like a gnawing necessity; a burning, internal wish to see what more he can do to challenge and elevate himself as a creative. Hence, sometimes, you have to walk alone to realize how you walk with others: a recurring theme in his songs.

Love Fame Tragedy – Brand New Brain (Official Video)

From “Pills” to “My Cheating Heart,” the power of Love Fame Tragedy is his analysis of how we hurts others in hurting ourselves. While most recent songs are about anxiety, for LFT, heartbreak isn’t something that simply happens to you. It is a recurring theme in your life that stems from your choices as much as others. Part of the melodrama to his songs, is that he makes self-destruction feel like a pop jam. He is flashy and wounded all at once, belting notes of self-hate with sweet smoothness. In some ways, he embodies how easily we can carry Love Fame Tragedy within us like, rusted, moving parts we wish we could fix so as to run more efficiently.

All in all, Love Fame Tragedy had everything going for him. Fans of The Wombats were there; already knowing that Murph’s voice could not fail them. Yet, Love Fame Tragedy is about the personality of self-doubt; how we push through the clinks and clanks of our own confusions to still manage a functional social life. In essence, you may feel like a walking grave, but walk that grave to the dance- floor because you still need to dance. For More Information On Love Fame Tragedy Click Here.
