Concert Review: Lowly Are A Danish Power In Berlin NYC

Lowly is my new fave band, in part, because they are from my old town of Aarhus, Denmark. Yes, I lived in the picturesque little town, but I NEVER knew it held Lowly; a band that displays the jolts, jives, and jitters of “pop-EDM”. At their Berlin show, they introduced themselves to America, and we were welcoming to their foreign power.

Seemingly led by Nanna Schannong and Soffie Viemose, the Danish group filled Berlin’s small stage with indie-pop that felt grooved in surrealism. Playing tracks of their new album, Heba, each song felt dipped in tye-dye, and worn by them like shirts emblemed in their creativity. Songs such as “Word”, “Still Life”, and “Prepare The Lake” were steamed by the “ying/yang” dynamic of Nanna and Soffie. While Nanna wields her guitar strings like a tiny hammer jamming nails of noise, Soffie shakes her body as if she is the receiver of such rhythmic tools. Between Nanna’ stillness and Soffie’s ebb and flowed movements, they display core reactions to their sound.

From “Deer Eyes” to “Stubborn Day”, the crowd felt happily divided between those that wished to sway in Nanna and Soffie’s uniting vocals and those that wanted to plug into Lowly’s orchestrated, elaborate beats as if they were electricity surges. Seeing Lowly’s audience effect, I kept on thinking of a “modern church”. In it, a batch of Millennials came for Sunday Mass to hear two supple, angelic voices harmonize and counter each other in somberness and exuberance. While all their songs embrace the doom of love and the electro synth-waves that define modern sound, it is hard to pinpoint what genre Lowly belongs in, which is their ultimate charm.

Yes, they are “indie” and “pop”, but, most importantly, Lowly are everywhere, which is why I got a strange, “church” feel from them. They transformed Berlin into a temple for creative eccentrics that are both motivated and depressed by love’s double-edged swords. While most artists aim for “the now” in making sound and stories of love, Lowly are aiming for the future. For More Information On Lowly Click Here.
