Concert Review: Making Movies Is A Beautiful Resistance
“Music is the most beautiful resistance,” exclaimed lead singer Enrique Chi. This he said after describing how indigenous in Latin America were not allowed to play instruments like the guitar. Or what? You thought the master really loved the slave’s singing? Yet, the natives of Latin America, like most indigenous, were savvy and determined to have a semblance of joy, particularly through music, in the face of the oppression. Hence, they invented the “cuatro” or “tiny guitar” as most onlookers call it. These stories moved through Making Movies’ Mercury Lounge show.
Resistance is not just beautiful: it can be fun. Often, the best way to protest cruelty is through humor and song because everyone judges the person who can’t take in a good joke and a big beat. With this in mind, Making Movies creates music that makes your body want to move and groove, but, if you stand still, your mind will deepen. Their lyrics are all about standing up to systems that keep you down. but, for them, like our native ancestors, fighting against violence calls for peaceful methods like, as song. This makes sense considering most fights break out because someone heard something they did not want to hear. I can’t say any war started without some discussion, but music makes talk get real.

Each band member provides a genuine joy and purpose to their talent that reveals a good time should be taken seriously. I can honestly say Making Movies gave a performance that showed feeling good is important, especially when you are oppressed. Their songs ranged from covers, “Everybody Want To Rule The World,” to tracks made with the legendary Ruben Blades: another superstar whom added politics to every rhythmic pulse. Thus, they felt like a happy rebellion: somehow managing to make anarchy feel smooth and morally necessary because if having a system causes so much pain we either have to change it or lose it.
