Concert Review: Mallrat Turns A Tuesday With Thursday Vibes At Rough Trade
Mallrat made me feel like a fossil. At 18 years old, she is rising to be the Generation Z version of Lily Allen. Waltzing the lines between singing, rapping, and overall commentary on how mundane life can be when your imagination is wild. From “UFO” to “Westfield”, Mallrat ignited “Awws” and “Yeahs” for actually achieving a dream while she is young.
You cannot avoid feeling old when you see Mallrat. The entire crowd could buy beer, except her. She had long braids, bounced around the stage until she got a “stomach stitch”, and giggled at her inability to chat between tracks. Yet, the crowd was charmed by her sweetness, and the feeling that we were witnessing ur little sister shine. Her youthfulness was a secret weapon she did not know she had, but sparked an openness in the crowd to encourage her talent rather than judge it. Moreover, it is undeniably exciting to catch a star just when they are being born, so that you can watch their career grow brighter.
Mallrat – Uninvited (Official Video)
We all can be ageist, and different prejudices lie between the old and young, but experience could not be held against Mallrat. Making music since her first year in highschool, she had a clear ability to capture boredom and turn it into magic. From “Suicide Bond” to “Better”, her voice was as soft and malleable as Ms. Lily Allen; allowing her to treat her notes and lyrics like scarves she could fashion to keep you warm. Her friendliness and appeared innocence created a light ambiance that was PERFECT for a Tuesday, when people still feel antsy about, technically, being in the beginning of their work week. Yet, that did not stop them from dancing.
Mallrat – Better
With her best friend, DJ Denim, on board, Mallrat has some danceable tracks. First, she was already the coolest person for having her own personal DJ, but then her mixes were a surprising blend of Hip Hop, House, EDM, and Groove. Making Tuesday feel like a Thursday, people were shaking and bopping to her songs because her baselines were too heavy to not step upon and move. For More Information On Mallrat Click Here.
