Concert Review: Marika Hackman Shows Me Why I Love Music At Baby’s All Right
There is something special to seeing one artist support another, especially if they are different. You, suddenly, feel permission to love more music, or, at least, love more music. For example, the idea that I can love Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar, despite differing styles, is a sign that music opens you. Thus, when Big Moon backed Marika Hackman in her set at Baby’s All Right, music grew in love and showed the supersonic power of two amazing acts uniting in force.
Marika Hackman – Boyfriend
Yes, I know that previous statement sounds like I went to see a superhero group, but, maybe, that is exactly what Marika Hackman and Big Moon should form. The presence of these femme empowered ladies moved the crowd, especially because it was evident that they had grown close. Inner jokes and “on the road” memories were laced inbetween Hackman’s songs from her album, I’m Not Your Man. I loved this record, which is why I was so excited to see Hackman, and happy to witness her be accompanied by a group of women that bring “rock n’ roll” chic. Their presence elevated how “rock n’ roll” Hackman’s sound truly is in encompassing the genre as one for those struggling to find their identity. Hackman made it clear that I’m Not Your Man covered many themes because her experiences, as well as her being, are layered, and she is seeking to uncover each for its worth. Yet, at Baby’s All Right, the crowd had already confirmed Hackman’s worth. In show, her vocals perused with over tracks like, “Violet”, “Boyfriend”, “My Lover Cindy”, and “Cinnamon”, in the same light billows through smoke. There is a light, vaping sensibility to her voice that make her sound like a sun-ray going through a cloud. The result is a quiet passion that brews through tracks like, “Gina’s World” and “Ophelia”. Though Hackman is super smiley and sweet, a seriousness takes over her when singing. She, suddenly, becomes the moment of her song’s situation, of which many of her tracks do not cower from youthful chaos and confusion. Yet, like quiet passion, there is a novice and tenderness to Hackman’s voice and lyrics; like a woman that knows that. every-time you feel lost, there is an opportunity to find yourself anew again.
Marika Hackman – My Lover Cindy (Official Video)
It is easy to laud Marika Hackman in concert. For one, her songs are some of the best you will hear. The easiness of her sound and presence show the casualness of topics like sexual and gender identity, which can appear more tense than what they should be. Leave it to music, or at least Marika Hackman, to show that finding your identity is rough because it is human, but that also makes it possible to achieve. At Baby’s All Right, Marika Hackman was rightfully confident in her identity as an artist. For More Information On Marika Hackman Click Here.
