Concert Review/ Artist Close-Up: Mark Diamond Is Love’s “Hummingbird”
Mark Diamond played from his new EP, Hummingbird, and I was surprised. Ones To Watch is a high honor, and they invited him over to “introduce” himself as a rising singer ready to croon about heartbreak. What surprised me was how down to earth he was in person, and how his music, when live, had a country flare of sorts.
Maybe, it was the big cowboy hat he was rocking or how he clutched his guitar like it was a bag of woes, but Mark Diamond has folkish/ Nashville vibe to his sound. Heck! Even his name, Mark Diamond, feels like it could carry a duet with Johnny Cash or Patsy Cline. Mark Diamond and Hank Willams sing the “Lovesick Blues.” It would not be far off considering tracks like, “Hummingbird” and “Steady” were hopeless and hapless feeling of never finding the “right fit.” We talk about finding the “right one,” but what about the right fit? What about getting a great guy or gal and not feeling connected to them or as if your sense of time and space is off for love?
What I love of Mark Diamond is that he gives off an easy-going vibe while delving into a common complication of relationships that many do not discuss: yes, I want love, but do I really want to be with someone. Relationships are kind of like babies; cute and cuddly but then they poop the diaper and you are trying to figure out who you can hand them over to. The fact that Diamond’s voice is so clear in delivery makes him feel like a Hummingbird; flying and singing to find some sort of rhythm in life until he build a nest of love.
