Concert Review: Mating Ritual Provide Fun For Music Hall of Williamsburg

I am a perfectionist, which is why when I saw Ryan Lawhon redo a new song because the audio was off, I completely understood. There were a few audio problems at Mating Ritual’s Music Hall of Williamsburg show, but the subtle mishaps helped to show their meticulous and ambitious drive. Moreover, it showed their brotherly unity.

Lead singer Ryan Lawhon 100% loves being the center of attention, and he has the natural personality to garner it. Leading a band called, Mating Ritual, is not exactly a sign of coyness. Thus, his smooth gyrations of his guitar, his body, and his voice felt like someone was drizzling music massage oil on everyone’s ears. The way Ryan smooths, drips, and kneads his notes aims to draw upon the wildness and overall seduction of having a good time. He wants you to go to their concert, have an obnoxious blast of fun, and then wake up the next morning hung- over to say, “OMG, I can’t believe I did that!”. Hence, why I could see their audio troubles, from the beginning, bothered him as he looked at his brother/ co-captain Taylor Lawhon to assure that, at the very least, their rhythms made the people move.

Ryan’s demeanor immediately sets up that he wants you to feel like you have seen the greatest show on earth, and Mating Ritual certainly has the music to do so. They captivated NY with their modernized “disco” vibe in tracks like, “U + Me Will Never Die”, “Cold”, “Light Myself On Fire”. While Mating Ritual is a indie pop-rock band, the ways their grooves shimmered and swung through the atmosphere reminded me of disco. Now, they were not trying to summon Donna Summer, but they promoted the freedom of dancing and being strange, which might be why the crowd tried to banter with them. When a crowd tries to crack jokes with you, it means they like and trust you. Mating Ritual’s capacity to make their audience feel like an amassing of their buddies only amped that their music is dynamical for summer radio.

Mating Ritual may have not been the headliner at MHOW, but they will certainly be it in a few months, and a few years later they will have batch of Billboard hits and awards under their name. Drive, talent, and bopping creativity, Mating Ritual have every single thing in their favor to create the hits that soundtrack for people exactly what they desire to have: fun.
