Concert Review: Moon Taxi Soars To The Stars Over Brooklyn Steel

Some artists like big crowds because it validates them; the bigger the crowd, the more “loved” they are. Other artists could care less the size of the audience as much as the mass of their energy. For Moon Taxi, you could put them in on the moon or in a taxi, and they will serve an equal amount of energy by feeding off the crowd’s praise.

Shakespeare said music is the food of the soul, but, for musicians, an audience’s cheers is their meal. Let’s just say, at Brooklyn Steel, Moon Taxi were very full. They give one of the simplest, most joyous shows because no moment goes beyond the music. Sure, behind them they have a screen of moving images, but even that is not necessary. Every instance derives from the cheers and chants that stir within their hooks and choruses to make you feel hopeful in life.

I am constantly dividing artists between those that sing to the gutlessness of hopelessness and the ones that reach for the optimism, and Moon Taxi are of the latter. From covers to, of course, their originals, every choice they make for a concert brims with the initiative of connection. “Let The Record Play,” “Make Ur Mind Up,” and “Change” spoke to the moments in our life when we decide to stop fighting how much we want to be apart of our journey. Instead, lyrically, Moon Taxi ask you to invest, without requirements, into your life and their music, which is why their show makes you feel invincible, and Trevor Terndrup is the voice of said invincibility.

Terndrup is the quintessential frontman. He embodies everything we love from our lead singers; a voice that summons your spirit, a personality that moves it, and a smile that warms it. He has a swimming soul that makes him move across the stage and through his vocal range like one would their childhood playground. It may seem “cheap,” but he seems so happy and at home on the stage that you cannot help but feel happy, as well. Though it may sound strange, not every artist appears so brazenly joyous to be on the stage. Yes, they perform well, but there is an added layer of exhibition to a performance when you feel the singer is loves what he is doing and jamming the night away in melody.
