Concert Review: SZA Takes CTRL At Brooklyn Steel

SZA played Brooklyn Steel to a sold out crowd eager to sonically salivate the exceptional CTRL. If there is one thing this album emanates, it is cohesion; with one track flowing into the other like ripples in a creek. Yet, her NYC show seemed to be focused on transitions.

There are many things to praise about SZA as a performer, and the first has to be her ability push forward her thoughtfulness. CTRL is such a sonically rich album, you could easily get lost in its instrumentals. Hence, SZA plays with her soundscapes to really amp that CTRL is a record based in her spiritual self-exploration. “Twentysomething”, “Love Galore”,”Supermodel”, and “Drew Barrymore” were just a few of the songs that leapt out as smooth swims of a woman diving into her self-image. To feel beautiful is not easy, but from her thankfulness to her insightfulness, SZA has figured out that your can, at least, be gorgeous by being kind. Am I pretty enough? good enough? smart enough? These questions plague us most when we either love another person or a dream more than we love our self. The clash was messaged and received by the crowd of Millennials that sung each lyric like SZA was a Hip Hop Priestess teaching them new prayers. Of course, we were willing to learn them, especially at realizing the worthy gem of her voice.
SZA – Supermodel

SZA has a beautiful voice that her album DOES NOT do justice compared to her concert. This fact made me most excited as a concertgoer, and person that genuinely wants her to rise further in artistic heights. As an artist, SZA is so fresh and new to most Millennial palettes. She, like Kehlani and Jhene Aiko, have offered 2017 music that allows listeners, particularly women, to lie within their insecurities to observe and elevate them into sexual empowerment/ identity. From “Go Gina” to “Broken Clocks” every song seemed to strike the many faces/ flavors you will wear throughout your life. Desires grow, dreams change, and through it all SZA’s voice seems to flutter with a softness and authenticity that feels fantastical. She hits high, wispier notes with an easy glee as she rhythmically bops around the stage, gives advice about always keeping some weed for yourself, and sweetly marvels about the craziness of her rising career/ self-esteem.
