Concert Review: Night Moves Are Made At Rough Trade
Night Moves’ performance at Rough Trade was stunning. Micky Alfano has a GORGEOUS voice, an it feels hypnotic in how it both takes you to and alleviates you from your darkest spaces. When I think of singers like Them Yorke or James Blake, I think of their ability to make pain and self-doubt feel both magical and mainstream. Night Moves have the same capacity.
Introducing some new songs from their upcoming album, Can You Really Find Me, the band was like Pinegrove meets Radiohead. Their music leapt from the stage into people’s minds like the songs one plays just before a war. Yet, I am not talking “grab your sword and run for the field” kind of war. I am talking about the ones you face with loved ones; the wars that happen over text, a misinterpreted phrasing, a bad day/ mood, or the feeling that a person you once loved more than anyone is become a stranger. Night Moves play for the “pre-game” to confronting someone that is not longer acting like your person .
Night Moves – Strands Align (Official Video)
Frankly, I am enamored by Alfano’s voice. It radiated from his vocal chords were made from LED lighting. His ability to hold a note as if he was the vessel for it to travel made tracks like, “Strands Align” and “Recollections” surprisingly emotional when hear live. While, on recording, their music carries a bounce to it, feeling like a nostalgic sway through the discotheque. While they still carry a groove when live; they are, again, surprisingly mellow and “emo” in concert. Yet, that could be a result of Alfano’s vocals, and how they hypnotized the crowd to be found in feelings.
Night Moves – Recollections (Official Audio)
I love a concert where a mass of people get together to get emotional and dance. I have seen a few shows that allow such a space like, Frightened Rabbit and Weyes Blood. Similarly, Night Moves make music from “longing” for better and dreading the challenged you must face to get it. In doing so, they create a concert where your heart can breathe and break, all at once, of which it needs to do both. For More Information on Night Moves Click Here.
