Concert Review: Kitten Purr At Rough Trade NYC

Kitten’s Chloe Chaidez is a tour-de-force. Coming out in her “Oops, I Did It Again” outfit, she could not stop tossing her arms and legs like the head twirler of a marching band. Her acrobatic moves stoles the show, and became a launch-pad of appreciation for her voice. Who else can jump from a drum-kit, and then give us “Pat Benatar” vocal notes?

It is easy to compare Chaidez to the likes of Joan Jett, Blondie, or other 80’s femme badasses because she shares their aesthetic and vocal capacity to blend glam with a rasped rebelliousness. Tracks like, “I Did It”, “Pink Champagne”, and “Strange Embrace” felt like retro-club bangers. You could imagine people with their “flock of seagulls” hair and padded shoulders zipping and zig-zagging through the dance floor as if their feet were playing laser-tag with rhythm. It was an intoxicating atmosphere of party and dance, once gain, led by Chaidez’s physicality.

I cannot convey how much stamina it takes for you to move, jump, and bend your body, in a latex suit, to then proceed and hit a perfectly pitched, concisely annunciated lyrical note. As Chaidez shook herself like a rag-doll, making me question if she had bones, I could not doubt she had soul. From “Cut It Out” to “Abigail” she never stopped giving all of herself to every song, even doing an outfit change and jumping from the balcony of Rough Trade to body surf the crowd. I was beyond impressed with her. For all the exceptional musicians backing her, including the phenomenal, guest appearance of Spencer Ludwig, Chaidez was the star. You could not stop reveling in how much energy she wanted to give to her crowd, and how her voice never failed to provide.

I would see Kitten a thousand times again, and know that I would be equally impressed every time. Chloe Chaidez cannot fail in power or prowess because she would not allow herself. Her determination to infuse adrenaline into a fun Tuesday made everyone turn up. For More Information On Kitten Click Here.
