Concert Review/ Artist Close-Up: Three Reasons To Love G-Flip

Playing a show at Mercury Lounge, G-Flip came out looking like a Skater Girl, but her performance challenged the “easy-going” stereotypes tethered to such an image. She had the bleach-blonde hair, tattoos that adorned her skin like doodles on a notebook page, her hat on backwards, and a graphic tee with enough colors to match her un-matching socks. Yet, she had a voice that was steadily raw and broad in realness. Therefore, here are three reasons to love G-Flip.

Reason #1 – She is a Tech Genius

G-Flip humbly bragged that she created a talking drum- kit called Geronimo. Women in sciences: Yes, Please!  I was super impressed by her savvy and charm by creating a “gimmick” that WILL NEVER GET OLD! As Geronimo came to life to say the first word he learned was “F**k!”, I, honestly thought of Chance The Rapper. If you have ever seen his show, he creates a storyline around puppets that both journey with him, but also push him to learn. Geronimo may not talk much, but he displays poignant images as G-Flip sings and becomes a magnetic highlight of her show.

Reason #2: G-Flip Swag

I became obsessed G-Flip’s look/swag because she is a prime example that you do not judge a book by its cover. She looks and speaks like a carefree, relaxed gal strolling through the stage, and, by chance, performing a song. Then, she has an image of a woman exploding from her inside out across her drum-set or you notice she has a tattoo that says, “Bad”, and you realize this young lady knows pain. What you choose as an image, especially a tattoo or drawing, says something about you. Thus, you feel thrown; the woman with a sweet smile shocked people came to see her, is, actually, used to feeling unseen.

Reason #3: THAT VOICE!

G-Flip’s voice is wrought with internal tension, and has a raw range that tethers even her highest notes to an R&B-esque turmoil. When she sings tracks like, “Killing My Time” and “Waking Up Tomorrow”, you feel stunned at how her voice gracefully grates hurt and naivety like cheese on life’s pasta. She lyrically bulldozes all the times she regretted how she “f**ked” up a situation or isolated herself. Using her hands or sitting on the edge of the stage as if she is talking to someone saying, “I want be better a better “Lover” or I wish I could meant it when I say “I Am Not Afraid”, but I do not know how.” Thus, I love G-Flip because she really does flip images of “happy go lucky” into honest portrayals over how hard it is to feel happy or lucky.
