Concert Review: Nilüfer Yanya Is The Future At BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn

Nilüfer Yanya is quickly rising to international notice because she feels like she is from Brooklyn, Turkey. The Chelsea Londoner combines her father’s Turkish’s roots, her mother’s Barbadian’s style, and her training in rock guitar to create a sound that speaks to the internationalization of “youth culture.” The quintessential “young person” that, no matter where or when, wants to start revolutions while also “chillaxing” and blasting music in empty parking lot with friends. #goals Thus, it felt right that BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn had her to perform.

While Yanya was opening for the PHENOMENAL Broken Social Scene, her debut, Miss Universe, came to life to the Brooklyn crowd, especially the youth. I had either forgotten or, suddenly, realized how powerful BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn is in capturing and farthing rising artists to the next level. From Burna Boy to Sampa The Great, BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn is curating the artists of tomorrow TODAY, and it has always done that. From Janelle Monae to Noname, even in its past, BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn has had a predictive quality, which is good news for Nilüfer.

Nilüfer Yanya – In Your Head (Official Video)

Combining artists that have arisen with those that are rising, BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn is a genuinely fantastic concert series. Nilüfer’s performance felt cool and collected; breezing through the highs and lows of being brilliant, young, and “socially voiceless.” I have said it before; we are a strange, ageist world. Glorifying youth, as an image, but silencing its voice in defining the future. Meanwhile, society can treat elders as if they are already dead; acting like there is a marked age for when your beauty and creativity deceases. In some ways, Nilüfer and Broken Social Scene’s span of rock genres speaks to this. They attest to the perpetual wonder as to when you get your “chance” to have a seat at the table. Thus, seeing a community of people ponder the depth of that fear through beautifully easy music was perfect. For More Information On BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn Click Here.
