Concert Review: Noah Kahan Wins New Fans At Beacon Theatre

Watching Noah Kahan, I kept on thinking of my best friend and her love for “easy listening” and “feel good” music.Often, it is empowering songs or tracks that leave you in your “feels” that are denoted as not “real” enough. Yet, if our reality is constructed by our perspective, in what it is and what we want it to be, then feeling good is feeling real. To Noah Kahan, this is a natural equation.

With his guitar led melodies and shy humor, Noah Kahan won over his audience, which was perfect because he is right up there with James Bay’s style. They both sing to the hopeless optimist; the young man or woman that cannot stop fighting to get love even though he or she had stopped believing it will come. Thus, tracks like, “Hurt Somebody,” “Youngblood,” and “Mess” spoke to the crowd on a deeper level and placed Noah on several of their Spotify playlists. 

Kahan has a voice that sprouts notes going from a lower, girded register to floating high notes; interchanging both to signify the highs and lows of trying to feel balanced. From “False Confidence” to “Passenger,” his set felt brisk and kept the audience intrigued by his ability to create three minute fables. For him, a song is like a spiritual acknowledgment that life can suck but then it can get better again, which is exactly what people need: validation and uplift.
