Concert Review: Oh Wonder Are Wonderful At Summerstage
There I was; behind an 11 month old baby dressed in pink, being held up by her dad, and trying to grab the streaming lights from Oh Wonder’s set. I do not know why, but the moment made me sentimental. I was witnessing the first concert of this child; whom, hopefully, would have a billion more awesome concert experiences. Yet, it all started with Summerstage.
It was a PACKED crowd filled with Brooklynites eager to hear Oh Wonder’s Ultralife album, which was written in Brooklyn. Yet, the crowd was diverse; filled with families that could not carry their strollers in Rough Trade or older men and women that might feel self-conscious waltzing into Bowery Ballroom. While we all may think concert halls only exclusivity is the VIP section, they, themselves, can feel like locations that hold age, monetary, or even aesthetic biases. Yet, Summerstage is a “come one, come all” domain, and people welcomed that notion in droves.
Oh Wonder – High On Humans
I have seen Oh Wonder before, and they are always a vibrant show. Similar to Phoenix, they carry that “happy effect,” which is why I was so surprised they were shocked at their crowd size. I had not realized how much Summerstage could fill out like an MSG arena, but, as Josephine mentioned, it might feel scary for an artist to not have ticket sales; it simply is whomever shows up.Yet, no one could deny the the bright, patterned lights behind them as their electro-pop harmonies danced through the summer air. It was such a crisp night people enjoyed a park most of us walk through, but not too many New Yorkers stay to have a moment.

It is a nice effect to have the smell of green grass fuse with the air as you and your friends with Josephine and Anthony, a.k. a Oh Wonder. The crowd wooed and awed at having a night that felt inviting to all. It was one of the premier artists in pop serving every New York a nice day in Central park; you cannot beat that.
