Concert Review: Oh Wonder Leave Me Feeling Wonderful At Rough Trade NYC

Oh Wonder played to the nines at Rough Trade NYC, presenting new material from their upcoming album. The Aussie duo could not stop marveling at how far they have comes for just a little over a year of sold out shows with crowds like, of that night, singing along and dancing as if Oh Wonder had left them in literal wonder. Like Lewis Del Mar proudly marveled, when talent and hard work gets that splash of good luck/ blessed the results are magnetic.
Oh Wonder – Ultralife (Official Video)

I was EXTREMELY excited to see Oh Wonder, and their show did not disappoint. At first it seemed like a straight show of hits such as, “Lose It” and”Without You”, and songs like “Dazzle” and the new “Ultralife” driving the crowd wild in leaps. With a bright, neon OW blazing behind you, there was no confusing that this was an OH Wonder concert. It was a particularly flashy element for a duo that prides on its simplicity and search for connection of which their new, upcoming track “High On Human” was a celebratory anthem for those rare moments when either you and a friend or even a kind, random stranger connect on a deep “sameness”. In fact, all their tracks from breakups to breakthroughs, are about feeling the same with someone, but in an exciting way like, finding a good conversation in what was initially a boring party or waiting on line and humorously hearing someone share your same idea on music or politics. Either way, you feel, suddenly, a little less weird and alone, in this world, which meant a lot especially to the audience. There were no guards up, only smiles, particularly for lead songstress,
Josephine Vander Gucht.

Oh Wonder – Heavy

Josephine is a sparkling personality that, when combined with the cool friendliness of , it sets up a concert domain of peace and bliss. Together they form a bubbly and froth dynamic that makes their tracks pour like sweet champagne into their citrus rhythms. Both share soothing vocals that when harmonized together shimmer and burn like caramelized vanilla; you just watch the purity of one note give a lyric a new taste and texture. Such a capacity helped them shine beyond the keyboards in front of them. which I always state is not an easy feat. You truly need a vibrancy to have presence go beyond what is in front of you like, your instrument, be a simple barrier to your destination: the audience. Moreover, none of their songs ever get dark or, at least, unbearably moody. They are simply a sunny duo that orchestrates their performance and arrange their keys to always keep hopefulness that you will find a partner that feels the “same” as you in human connections.
