This is a simple review for a simple band, and I say in the best of ways. Pert Near Sandstone is a straight-forward jamming session in concert. Thus, when they placed Brooklyn Bowl, they converted this hipster locale into what seemed like a family balcony in Charleston.
When you think of bluegrass folk music, you think of a simple gathering of people in a nice balcony or park dancing and laughing. Bluegrass music is humble in nature, and focuses on the elaborate beauty of string and brass instruments. Lyrically, the genre is simple and often focused on moral of humorous narratives of people’s lives. Thus, the genre carries a massive following because of the grounded escapism it offers to its audience, which Pert Near Sandstone embodies fully. As they played their fiddles, violins, and guitars the crowd pranced across the dance floor like they were flying. These men are seasoned musicians with their own history of being in multiple other bands until they landed in Pert Near Sandstone. Their lengthy musical experience explains their ease on stage and with their instruments. By now, they have been through so much for their love of music that they can express it with effortlessness.
To be honest, Pert Near Sandstone do not appear like performers, but that is their charm. They seem more like a band of friends/ brothers that spontaneously decided to get up on stage, play for the crowd, and show off their great talent. They have the perfect mixt of random, frenetic energy with a warm welcoming sound. There is absolutely no “airs” to their music and personalities, which is why you love to hear their joking between each other and their banter with the audience. They make you admire their bond in music and friendship, and even want to join it.
Usually, when you go see a band, you do not think of how you would love to join it, and, if you do, it is probably in some fantastical kind of way. Yet, Pert Near Sandstone are so down to earth in style and sound that you want to join their band out of the sheer joy they exude. They represent the dream we all have of finding a solid clique of people to go through life with, but Pert Near Sandstone also has the luxury of going through life in music. Hence, Pert Near Sandstone is the perfect concert choice to have a good, kind time with friends, and dance to some exceptional bluegrass music.
