Concert Review: Phoebe Ryan Is Brand New At Baby’s All Right

Phoebe Ryan introduced several new songs at Baby’s All Right, including a new track called, “Heart Attack,”  with Tove Lo there to help her premiere. The night was filled with STANS, and Phoebe Ryan was clearly stanning them, as well; laughing at how she knew so many of her followers’ twitter handles. It was clear that Phoebe’s adoration for pop music stemmed from how it made people feel larger than life.

What it real? Does our sadness actualize reality or is it our happiness? Pop music, in a very odd way, asks this question by making the most joyfully sounding songs about getting dumped via text (lol!). Phoebe had an array of tracks, but her twist on pop is similar to Charlie XCX’s in that she never mentions a breakdown without a breakthrough. It is as if her lyrics are automatically compelled to find positivity or enlightenment from the hatefulness or hurtfulness of someone else. Hence, it felt easy to like her songs because they enacted what we are all supposed to do: be stronger.

Phoebe Ryan – A Thousand Ways

From “Chronic” to “Build Me Up,” Phoebe Ryan’s music is for the person that has been played and learn, in turn, how to play back. #fierce Often, we do not want to claim that a person, who aimed to hurt us, succeeded in their efforts, but Phoebe’s pop tracks say, “Yeah, you succeeded in hurting me, but  that only made me stronger and smarter.” It, literally, is true as even bones, after they break, grow back stronger. Having such empowering messages feels surprising because Ryan’s voice is saccharine and soft; as if your ears are so delicate to belt would bust them. Yet, that could be the point; strength softens you as you should be.

Phoebe Ryan – Build Me Up

There was, most definitely, a “joie de vivre” in Phoebe’s approach of the crowd. She was unabashed giddiness; picking up her guitar and going the center of the crowd as if life is born from how you share with people, and the audience’s gleefulness felt hyped by her quiet permission to be gleeful.  Her show was a place where happiness was reality.
