Concert Review: PJ Sin Suela Is A Revolution At SOB’s

Before going to PJ Sin Suela’s SOB’s show, I, literally, binge-watched Hip Hop Evolution. The show’s title speaks for itself; a documentary that follows how Hip Hop changed the world and, in turn, became changed. Frankly, every revolution, eventually, becomes an institution, which can feel frustrating for those that started it. When you begin change, you start it with a sense of freedom and brilliance, of which PJ Sin Suela completely had.

From med-student to global rapper, PJ Sin Suela’s represents Hip Hop’s folkish swag and party-starter sensibility. He can go from eviscerating Donald Trump for his wicked policies and then ask for a beer and ignite mass twerking. He represents humanity’s ability to be everything. We can be silly and smart. We can care and have no f**ks. We can laugh and cry and be disappointed or dazzled. PJ understands that, which is why his music feels so vast. Of course, it gets titled under genres like, Reggaeton, “Latin Rock,” and “Latin Pop,” to which I say, “Latin Pop is POP!” Yet, that is my point. PJ Sin Suela reminds our people that we are not “different,” dumb, or delinquents as a lot of media might make you think.

Latinx are human beings that want to be happy and know how to PARTY, despite prejudice. PJ Sin Suela is an exuberant personality, which only amplifies his intelligent rhymes and ability to show great fun lies in great minds. From running around the venue barefoot to bringing audience members up to dance and drink with him, he was the music embodiment of a Puerto Rican Family Reunion. We talk politics till an uncle gets upset, eat and get drunk until an aunt gets upset, and then dance as if nobody ever got angry. It was an enriching dynamic that made his show feel particular and, again, Hip Hop.

With middle fingers up, he spit verses that both obliterated anxieties and confronted very real fears. As the crowd sung with him word for word, I saw that he is a walking revolution; snagging followers to help him change and twerk the world for better. For More Information On PJ Sin Suela Click Here.
