Concert Review: Repeat Repeat Laughingly Repeat Themselves At Rough Trade

I love awkward. I am all about that Modern Family, “cringe” moment when you want to bury yourself in a blanket because of the humorous, human confusion. In this sense, Repeat Repeat completely charmed their Rough Trade crowd. In songs and conversation, they gleefully approached all the times we wished we could “sonic the hedgehog” out of a sticky, social situation.

As they played through tracks from newest record, Glazed, husband and wife duo, Jared and Kristyn Corder, felt like like two happy, “goofballs” that found each other in music. Their love/ romance was so accessibly sweet, especially as their voice blended and separated to show the sweetness of Kristyn’s vocality and the saltiness of Jared’s. United they heightened how their songs are about the battles between hope and hopefulness, which birth awkwardness. There is a certain, shameful feeling that builds within a person that, sincerely, thought a situation would go one way, only for it to go the opposite.

Whether it is a love miscommunication or a life misdirection, Repeat Repeat have dichotomizing sounds and verses, which could be felt in their “No One Knows” cover. Honestly, they are one of my FAVORITE covers of this track, and it comes back, again, to their sweet/salty vibe. Jared is hilarious, in part, because he is self-deprecating and can jokingly ramble about how he rambles. His voice feels raw and porous. Meanwhile, Kristyn adores his wit by smiling and encouraging it. Her voice feels light and saccharine, like perfume. From her pink hair to his thick-rimmed glasses, in style and personality, they represented the artsy outcasts that find happiness by being themselves.

It was a striking realization; when you are most you, you are, also, most isolated. Something about being and fighting to be yourself, will lead you down a lonelier path. Yet, on that path, you’ll find the people that will most love you in this life because they are meeting when you most know yourself. Hence, they get to choose to truly love the true you. It is a magical quest that I hope to Repeat Repeat! For More Information On Repeat Repeat Click Here.
