Concert Review: RFA Are Simply Fun At Mercury Lounge
“Boys JUST WANNA HAVE FUN!” Okay, the original line is “Girls just wanna have fun!” but, at Mercury Lounge, this seemed to be RFA’s message. People just want to have fun, and these guys really want to hang out, be goofy, and dream, as much as ladies, of a world with true love and peace. Yet, their songs bring out the simpleness of this idea.
When you think of love, peace, and joy, they feel like really big, indescribable energies. It is as if they are a magic cloud you need to summon to drape over the earth. Yet, to RFA, they are really simple, and live in the moments when you let yourself laugh with no doubt, love with no limit, and be smart without fear. We all have those moments when we are present in ourselves and the ones we love, of which tracks like, “Goodbye Stranger,” “Farewell,” and “Lazy” both celebrate and contemplate what takes us out of giving in.
Why don’t we push more for happiness to last rather than quickly summon it’s end because we fear it inevitability? This is a deep question that becomes prompted by lead singer Dan Coursart’s voice and lyrics. Dan has a voice that feels inquisitive; as if he is reading answers about life and love for the “Big Test” tomorrow. He moves and carries his guitar like a pen, and he writes the verses that feel “millennially” shakespearean; combining “instragrammable” captions with sonnets. Add on that their melodies range from soft and surfing to punched and pouncing, and RFA feel like a ride to all the levels of rock.
Altogether, RFA feel like an easy addition to your week. When you pick a concert, you are not only picking a sound but a group of people. From them, as a band, to the crowd they earned, it truly was an ambiance of gathering. They have a way of making their concert feel insular; as if we all are really in their apartment, and they decided to whip out instruments and jam. Such a dynamic is endearing for people who want to go out while feeling like they have “stayed in” and chilled. For More Information On RFA Click Here.
