Concert Review: Rodrigo Y Gabriela Turn Anxieties Into Friends
For Rodrigo y Gabriela, to put words to their music, would make their sounds feel less. For them, a guitar rhythm holds a millions verses, and, with each song, imaginations were sparked. At times, we forget sound is enough to ignite dreams, but, at Beacon Theatre, Rodrigo y Gabriela reminded everyone.
Admittedly, I am a sucker for lyrics. I love poetry and literature; absorbing words as if they held tiny keys of healing. Yet, that level of faith and bonding is how Rodrigo y Gabriel approach their guitars. With how they played, the duo felt like a quartet; regarding their instruments as equal bandmates. The man next to me, who had literally traveled the world following them, had seen them 32 times and remarked, “They are just two guitars.” He was completely right and I understood the depth of his statement. With two guitars, a sold out audience felt spiritually revived and massively impressed.
Rodrigo y Gabriela – Mettavolution
The techniques Rodrigo y Gabriela are superbly inspiring. They left their audience in awe; wondering if they could even be capable playing instruments with such a balance of tenacity and grace. Honestly, I type my name into a laptop and get carpal tunnel, but Gabriela sanded, scraped, struck, and sculpted her guitar like it was her artful purpose. My finger-tips felt inflamed watching hers, but, to the audience, it was a magic show of hands; with a few incapable of sitting down.
Rodrigo y Gabriela – Terracentric
The night could be encapsulated in two powerful moments. The first was Rodrigo’s description Mettavolution, and how the 5 years it took to make this album was in observance of humanity. Both him and Gabriela had realized that your anxieties never go away, and, instead, you must “embrace them like friends.” Like with his guitar arrangements, you take your insecurities and soothe them like an old partner. It was a beautiful notion that felt encompassed by their cover of Pink Floyd’s Echoes. The near 20 minute opus enraptured the audience, and stapled their talent as musicians connected with mindfulness. For More Information On Rodrigo Y Gabriela Click Here.
