Concert Review: Ruth B. Is Golden At Le Poisson Rouge
There we all were. Sitting with candlelit tables, and glaring forward at the neon hues of blue and pink that gently shone upon Ruth B. The songstress began her career as a viral sensation; fascinating viewers and earning click with a her distinctly smoked voice. She sings her songs with radiance that makes her lyrics seemingly as lucent as the stars or as natural as oxygen. At Le Poisson Rouge, she built the bridge between music and breathe, by showing both are vital to humanity.
Ruth B. – Lost Boy (Official Video)
The perks of Ruth B’s show being seated was that, immediately, we were placed in a position to listen, and made the singer a professor of life. Going through her debut album, Safe Haven, she described the real-life situations and soulful turmoils that inspired her song. With only candles for light, the night had a feel of open, honest, and heartfelt revelations. From her first love to her first break-up or the general confusion that comes from being young, talented, and ambitious, but not sure if you are lucky. What was so wonderful about hearing Ruth B’s emotions and motivations behind songs such as “Unrighteous”, “Dandelions” , and “Mixed Signals” is that you grew to respect her as an artist. If before you like or lover her music, in concert, she gained your admiration as a musician deeply in tune with both her talent and spirit. For Ruth B, a song is the equivalent to a diary page, and her diary is filled with dreams she has for herself and a sincere struggle to keep them pure and protected from her insecurities. Seeing such a kind, young woman open with her inner flaws and negativity but also brazenly perseverant in healing them, made me sentimental. From “First Time” and her cover of Khalid’s “Young, Dumb, & Broke” to the lovely rendition of her debut song, “Lost Boy”, there were several moments when I felt a slightly teary-eyed from the delicate sentimentality of Ruth B’s voice.
