Concert Review: Savoir Adore Teach You To Know Love

Savoir in french means “to know”, and “adore” is obviously a common, English term. To know to love is an eternal lesson. If every day you are not trying to love better than you are not trying to live better. This seemed to be Savoir Adore’s mantra at Rough Trade, and they had the literal prayer candles to prove it.

When you have your own prayer candle, you are legit! Yet, it was no surprise considering this group travels with a donation jar for their favorite charities. Led by Paul Hammer and Lauren Zettler, Savoir Adore are on their 8th year of music, and they are excited about their new music, which I saw as a slightly darker: the keyword being slightly. Savoir Adore can go as “dark” as a panda falling over; in essence, they are always lovable and light. Yet, new songs like, “Late 2 The Party”, “Black & Blue”, and “Slow Motion” carried a certain edge. As if they were transitioning from their happier melodies, that could soundtrack a backyard party with friends, into heavier hooks that could bounce through a club night. Yet, their sonic shift matched where they are now.

It is no secret that A LOT of artists are no fans of Trump. Artists are creatives, and he is about destruction. Such energies do not match, which is why their brief mention of how they feel about “our times”, in a way, connected to their “heavier” sound. While their lyrics still discuss what it is to reach out for love, it seems the baselines are symbolic to how its grown harder to do so. Yet, such new mixes in styles gave them an 80’s feel that when splashed with their classics like, “Summer”, “Giants”, and “Devotion,” left you torn between going all footloose and frolicking in the sweetness of their arraignments.

To go jump or to sway? That is the question! For Savoir Adore, it is about both, but they make sure their is always a vibe of brightness and optimism. Zettler’s lulling vocals, when mixed with Hammer’s zipping vocality, make their harmonies feel like an emotional seesaw for you you inner, fun child. You simply wanted to hop on, play around, and revel in the glory of looking for love so that, finally, you could know it. For More Information On Savoir Adore Click Here.
