Concert Review: Shredders Live Up To Their Name At Elsewhere

SHREDDERS SHREDDED! At Elsewhere, this Hip Hop group, led by Stef and Sims, would have made Run The Jewels or MF Doom and Czarface proud. Both men approached the stage like Godzilla hitting the Tokyo Town. In essence, they really did shred.

Going into the crowd and igniting moshes and moves, Stef and Sims see their rap and performance style like Public Enemy holding a Soul Cycle session; all they want to do is get people fit and tossing middle fingers to societal establishments. SIMPLE! Yet, the crowd was eating it alive because their bombastic rhythms and personalities could make even the meekest soul turn into Rocky running up some Philly stairs. Even as I exited, Ayung man was jumping around outside like, “THAT WAS LIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” In essence, Shredders reveal that Hip Hop is also “punkish” in nature; a genre built to tell prejudice and false promises to “F**k Off.”
SHREDDERS – “Ayeyayaya” (Official Music Video)

Frankly, it is hard to describe a Shredders show because it lives like a moment of chaos; an instance where people vent out their stresses and feel really cool about it. Hence, my Godzilla- Tokyo reference comes in the fact that their crowd looked at them as if they were ripped from movie headlines or comic-books. They felt too surreal in confidence to not boost everyone else’s. Thus, every time they went in or got closer to the crowd, it was as if we were at a children’s party for adults; with two MC’s telling us “if you are happy and you know it then stomp the s**t out of our feet.” You can’t beat that message.
