Concert Review: Sinkane Brings Music of The World For National Sawdust

With multi-colored lights swooning behind him, Sinkane felt like he was swimming the tropics of sound. Suddenly, sand and sun met at National Sawdust to build Caparundi; a magical and colorful place where Africa, North America, South America, Asia, and the Caribbean blend together to create a new identity for all music and all peoples.

Sometimes, when I look at the history of the world, I see a species that could never avoid each other, but acted as if it could truly divide and separate this earth. While some of humanity’s unavoidable interactions have, obviously, led to war, Caparundi is a celebration of the most peaceful thing to ever happen between peoples of different walks of life: music. The entire show came through like a breeze: quick, cool, and uninterrupted. It was easy in its freshness, and how it hit you with the burst of a moment. For Sinkane, an instance feels like a mass of starry details exploding lighte emotions.

The audience became enraptured by Sinkane’s songs how they displayed the details of human history, art, and culture. Track after tracks felt like a museum of sounds accumulated by time and placed in position by Sinkane’s heart. For a music so wealthy and plentiful in rhythm, everything seems so simple at a Sinkane show. All music flows like an endless bottle of champagne. From Latin- Caribbean Funk to Afro-Pop fusions bubbled over to move bodies and minds as in hypnosis. Yet, while thoughts blanked from their usual anxieties, Sinkane’s voice swung like a hammer; smashing through glassed notes and letting its shards create mosaic, mindful images.

At National Sawdust, Sinkane’s show felt sacred in the stillness of world music; making your soul feel in place all around the world. Yet, more importantly, I was impressed by how Sinkane could take the power of his voice and make it accessible to everyone. When it comes to power, people think it is something to be excluding and exclusive, but his show proved the most “VIP” things to be is everywhere and with everyone.
