Concert Review: Sister Sparrow And The Dirty Birds Soar At Irving Plaza

Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds soared at Irving Plaza by giving some good ol’ fashioned music. They are a big, Americana band that smash country funk with an orchestra parade dynamic; making you want to grab a feather boa and bourbon to confront any hater that crossed you. In this sense, Sister Sparrow lived up to her title of “sister” and “sparrow.”

In many ways, the terms “sister” and “sparrow” carry the same charge. A sparrow is a symbol of joy, protection, and the simple union of love between people. What is more sisterly than that? Thus, lead singer Arleigh Kincheloe felt like a Sister Sparrow; singing her songs like an older sister would her younger siblings/ crowd. It is as if she is telling us her wisdom in “Sugar,” “We Need A Love,” and “Mama Knows;” capturing both the coolness, fun, and guiding vulnerability expected from an older sibling. The only difference is that Arleigh can SANG! Hence, in some ways, she proved stardom and sincerity go “hand in hand.”

Arleigh carries an approachability, a humor, and a strength throughout all her set; giving herself an “all you need” presence, which is what a sister/star is to you. In essence, you look up to her as she sways her voice and body with a giddiness and mischievousness; inviting the crowd to get wild, and tell anyone that tells them not to be “too crazy” to go to a looney bin. After all, why not “Feel Like Funkin’ It Up?” Thus, from “Ghost” to “Gold,” her voice is as red and as fiery as her hair, but The Dirty Birds are not backing down in equal passion. They even bring out the horns to amplify that the best advice you can give to anyone you love is to “love yourself and love through their life.” Sister Sparrow – Ghost [Official Video]

Yes, I said “love through their life.” You are not always going to love your situations, but how you love others, yourself, and the small details that build pictures is a fuel driving you through any predicament. Thus, as Arleigh belts and riffs through songs such as, “Can’t Get You Off My Mind” and “Don’t Be Jealous” this lesson emanates, and, with it, you genuinely like her. She presents her songs with pure charms, and, again, like a Sister Sparrow, you are happy to be her fan/ music family. For More Information On Sister Sparrow And The Dirty Birds Click Here.
