Concert Review: Skating Polly Gives Ugly Pop To St. Vitus
Part of the fun of bubblegum is that you can stretch it, chew it, break it, and mold it according to your whim. All while, it is a juice factory for your mouth and even your mind, at least, for those that find themselves daydreaming as the gum swirls upon their tongue. At St. Vitus, Skating Polly treated music like bubblegum; a treat to chew on with razored teeth and a cool tongue.
I reviewed their EP, New Trick, of which they played that night at St. Vitus, and proved why concerts are important elaborations of artists and recordings; they bring to the forefront elements that appear more subtly or secondary. While I haver marveled the band’s proud stake upon their invented genre, ugly pop, it was the punk chord they stuck that leapt of their performance. From their vocal annotations to their presence, I could not stop hearing “London Calling” from The Clash. They brought a quick, riotous youth vibe that stemmed purely from their voices because for the most part they stay in place. Lead singer Kelli Mayo stands before the mic like she is a machine ready to spew the lyrical bolts, nails, and imprints of songs “Louder In Outer Space”. Her voice plays with the emotional tiredness and recklessness that leads people to want to escaped into the cosmos. She can be lax and grating, but no matter what she is punk, and saves Skating Polly’s vivid lyricism to add the bubblegum pop people want to chew on.
All in all, for a brisk play upon the stage, Skating Polly left a mark. This trio are fast and sparked in their sound, which helped them fill the room for their moment. With already a few songs to make the crowd shake, I cannot wait for a full album to make the earth quake. For More Information On Skating Polly Click Here.
