Concert Review: Slothrust Splish Splash At Industry City

Vocalist/guitarist Leah Wellbaum may have been feeling under the weather, but you would not have noticed at Slothrust’s Industry City show. With the night sky as our cover, Leah sipped on her water and used her signature wit to power on through. The result was a show that was as fun as a Bobby Darin “Splish Splash” cover and as real as a nervous breakdown at Union Square; both things Leah has done.

Now she packs shows, but a few years ago she was another bartender at Trash Beer: filling glasses with beer and her mind with songs. Naturally, she had anxiety, of which tracks like, “On My Mind,” “The Haunting” and “Planetarium” were the by-products. The future is a giant unknown that, consistently, earns our fear, whether we like our present or not. If you are a bartender with dreams of being a singer or even if you were a lawyer with goals of being a carpenter, the point is that when you are not doing what you love then life feels too frightful to live. It is as if you are misplaced, despite waking up every day in your place. Thus, Slothrust’s punk pop sounds earned head-bangs, sways, and smiles for its emotional common-ground.

Slothrust – “Double Down” – Official Video

Vocally, Leah went from speaking her word to roaring and riffing them. She zigged and zagged notes as if her vocal chords were the road to her mario-karting mind. Her delivery is playful and matches well with how she cuts and scrapes her guitar chords; making her music presence feel like a dangerously fun child’s play. Backed by Kyle Bann (bass) and Will Gorin (drums), Slothrust’s sound was epic. It was riotous and bombastic; each arrangement sounding like a bull in the happiest, china shop. For them, being broken does not mean you lose your function, of which songs such as “Surf Goth” and “Double Down” display. You still keep trying to try until, one day, you thrive at trying. Slothrust’s show is for those trying to get there, of which Leah feels like their angelically, mischievous guide. For More Information On Slothrust Click Here.
