Concert Review: Spencer Ludwig Is The Show At Mercury Lounge
There are two things I noticed entering Spencer Ludwig’s show at Mercury Lounge. The first was that it was PACKED and filled with people that had been to his shows previously. Thanks to his residency in Freehold, Ludwig has marked himself as an NYC artists that give a concert as much as he throws a wild party. The second thing I noticed was a giant tuba, which meant to me the party was on.
From “Helium” to “Hard” or “Diggy,” by the end of Spencer’s show, the only thing we all had to to do was chug beer from his tuba and call it a night. The party atmosphere was instant and Spencer was giving pure, “Prince” vibes. The multi-talented, multi- instrumentalist is an example of why we need to teach children the arts and put instruments in their hands as much as cellphones. Not once in my life did I touch a tuba and the closest I got to a flute was when I pretended to play one with just air and my hands. Yet, he is a rocket-ship of energy; changing between instruments, singing his heart out, and flirting with the crowd as if encouraging someone to have a good time was the equivalent to asking him/her to marry you. Honestly, the audience would have said yes.

It is not a LIGHT-HEARTED feat that people came to see Spencer again, and it is because he is a spectacle. I have been following his career since his Warner Brother days, and recalled how they would market him like the next Bruno Mars. Yet. Spencer is something totally different. While both may live in the “party space” and can riff a note until it feels ripped, Bruno feels like the party you have in your block while Spencer is that crazy night in Ibiza. He is the choice you make when you want a little risk and a role-playing adventure. Thus, he brought out every special guest and music/ party hat-trick he had under his leather jacket to make his audience feel that his concert was a fantasy, and if that is his truest self, then let the fantasy live.
