Concert Review: Steady Holiday Fine Spins Love At Mercury Lounge

You ever notice in romantic films that, rarely, do they observe married life? The whole film is about two people trying to be a couple, and the grand finale is marriage: no aftermath. Steady Holiday’s voice may be finespun, but, like the golden thread woven from Rumplestiltskin, she is the beauty in our sordid, love fairytales.

At Mercury Lounge, Steady Holiday presented love like a child’s myth, of which adult realities, certainly, teach us a few lessons. Every story is built, which means it takes patience and perseverance to reach a prosperous chapter. Yet, the keyword is “chapter.” For Steady Holiday, if love is a book, it is not entirely amazing. Tracks like, “Love And Pressure” and “Nobody’s Watching” spoke to the public and private intimacies of being a couple. In public, every couple looks like a Disney dream, of which everyone comments their wishes to bond similarly. Yet, in private every human being/ relationship carries a world struggles that threaten to overshadow its lightness.

You have to wonder how home life matched Jasmine and Aladdin’s adventure life, or if Ariel missed the sea after few months in Prince Eric’s palace. Yes, I know I am getting really into fables, but Steady Holiday’s voice is interpretively imaginative. Her voice willows like cotton; it is pure, fluffed, and stemming from earthiness to create lyrical fabrics. From “Mothers” to “Who’s Gonna Stop Us” showed her voice is elastic and elaborate. It has no problem stretching the softness of a note until you absorb it into your skin like a lotion. This impact was only amplified by THE VIOLIN!

Everyone knows I am a sucker for a violin. It is one of the most gorgeous, romantic instruments, and fits so perfectly with Steady Holiday’s presence. She is not here to stir you into epiphanies. Instead, in style and song, she feels like a friend waiting for you to wake up so you can go on your morning run. Once again, I am going for specific images, but Steady Holiday summons them. She is all about sonically guiding you to love’s water, but you decide if you drink its truths. For More Information on Steady Holiday Click Here.
