Concert Review: Summerstage Brings Out The Top of Latin Pop
I CAN’T DEAL WITH SUMMERSTAGE THIS SUMMER! This year it has accumulated acts of pop/hip hop that could, easily, sellout any venue in the boroughs. Yet, this time, it invited some of Latinx’s top pop stars, and I was LIT ABOUT IT!
I can sum up my entrance into this Summerstage in one gif.
Yes, I walked into that concert like Rosie Perez. Hearing Tomasa Del Real upon entrance to Summerstage made me feel like I was in a childhood Block Party. She is one of MY FAVE Reggaetoneras from Chile, and being the event was also apart of the LAMC fest, she was a shining of example of the night’s main mission: to bring into the crowd’s attention some of the top artists internationalizing in the states. While she is a KWEEN in Latin America, on that night, her heavy baselines and sensual lyrics smacked the heat out of the air to leave everyone cooled in their body. Moreover, it showed that Summerstage is aware of the “music scene” internationally.

Of all the Summerstages, this one had the most “get down” feel, but you cannot beat Latin Pop/ Reggaeton when it comes to dancing. These genres were made be unabashedly physical, which is why the Summerstage arena felt divided. On one hand, you had the “chillers”; those that only needed a bleacher seat and beer. Then, you had the “choreographers”; those that believed Gabriel Garzon Montano’s music was made for them to make a groovy routine. Gabriel, in body and voice, is a natural groove. He feels like rhythm has found its flesh, and now vibes in sound and spirit. He has an uncanny ability to enrapture an entire audience with music so smooth its soul feels stilled as its body sways.
I say it often with the free concert series defining NY, like BRIC!; these shows are high quality meets higher access, which always makes me happy. Maybe, it is because I read so many Econ and Poli-Sci books you would think I am teaching an NYU Course, but I am aware it is not always affordable to find an exceptional good time that makes your life richer for having it.
