Concert Review: Tacocat Turn MHOW Into Sweet Valley High

Watching Tacocat, made me feel like I graduated Sweet Valley High. They were young, sweet, raucous, and kindly trying to start a riot against all the BS we are seeing in the world. It is no surprise that the cruelties against women happening in the South are affecting New York; we are a political state, of which most New Yorkers encourage political and religious discussions, at the dinner table, so as to eat angry. (lol!) With this in mind, Tacocat served an enraged desert to Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Big hair, outfits that looked like they came off the set of GLOW, and ethereal dancing made Tacocat seem like the Freaks and Geeks of Saved By The Bell. They were colorful, smart, eccentric, and would give Slater and Zack Morris a constitutional sermon on how women are equal human beings, which means that cannot juggle us around like clowns. I know I am using a LOT of 80’s references, but Tacocat are a definite time warp. I kept on thinking that they were the incarnated version of Cyndi Lauper’s Willy Wonka dreams. Naturally, I was here for the rainbow of glam, especially from Tacocat’s lead singer Emily Nokes.

If I could combine all the Go-Go Girls into one person, it would be Emily Nokes. She sparkles with fun and wit, which is why she truly emanates the feminist perspective. Women do not only give life; they are full of it. We are the most loving beings struggling to be loved. Throughout history, our bodies have been described to be as lowly as simple ovens, but yet every great hero, from literature to reality, was supported by a loving, compassionate woman. For Nokes, it is practically laughable that men turn to us to support them as leaders, especially emotionally, but yet do not deem us emotionally fit to be one. It is like telling the person who taught you to run that you cannot do a marathon.

Songs such as, “Bridge To Hawaii,” “Problem,” and “Crystal Ball” could make you race across the earth with feminine power. Tacocat are a fun, unabashedly femme show; bringing to you the power of womanhood through the saccharine vocals of Nokes and the pop-rock arrangements of Bree McKenna, Lelah Maupin, and Eric Randall. Again, I AM HERE FOR IT and you should be, too. For More Information On Tacocat Click Here.
