Concert Review: Tei Shi Shows The Power of Desire At MHOW
I usually feel torn with comparing artists to their prior performance. It is hard not to note the changes, especially because I have learned that even a month can change a style. Things happen, decisions are made, fan followings are grown, and artistry is developed. Enter Tei Shi’s Music Hall of Williamsburg show as an example that, like a fine wine, time makes you refine yourself.
Tei Shi – “Bassically” (Official Music Video)
I saw Tei Shi awhile back at Ludlow, and marveled at how she used the “living room” decor space as if she was walking around her room dreaming and singing her songs. She appeared so relaxed and almost distant from the crowd, as if we were seeing an art display of how a young woman lives when no one is looking. She drew upon that style but amped it up for her MHOW show. I adore her last album, Crawl Space, and felt it was distinguished for its electro sensuality. Tracks like. “Creep”, “Como Si”, “How Far”, and “Crawl” jumped out to me as a synth-jungles begging you to touch every palm and leaf that passed your presence. This image stood out as Tei Shi closed her eyes and caressed herself through every track. From “Baby” to “Sleep”, a move that looked coolly distant in a smaller setting had become tempestuously drawing in a bigger one. Tei Shi had grown more confident in her ability to emote lust as a luxury, which is exactly what she did. She dripped her vocals like a Marilyn singing to the president of her dreams; each verse left with a lighter breath than the last to assure her passion was more dainty than daunting. Of course, in this world, to say someone is delicate can be seen as a “weakness”, but Tei Shi’s tracks are all about exploring and transforming your weaknesses into strengths, especially when owning your mind, body, and desires in relationships.
Tei Shi – How Far
Fragility can be the key to vulnerability, and vulnerability can be the key to strength. Tei Shi may not have been much of a “talker” herself, but her music said enough in declaring that she is a young woman open to being open to herself. Yes, sometimes you need to be “open” to being open! As love-hued lights shined upon the center-staged songstress, a whole crowd opened up to rhythms that played so softly they almost felt like drugs inducing our calm, and Tei Shi’s voice loafed over us like sweet bread ready to elevate our sensual fills through lyrical heat.
