Concert Review: Tei Shi Brings Synth Dreams To Ludlow House

Tei Shi played Ludlow House introducing new songs from her upcoming, debut album Crawl Space, coming out March 31. The intimate setting amped up the intimacy of Tei Shi’s music. When it comes to self-exploration Tei She performs her music as if she were singing and moving in front of a mirror.

Every human being or at least every woman has had that moment where they stand in front of the mirror and look at themselves. They either look at themselves in judgment, in wonder, in admiration, and even pretend. Tei Shi represents all those moments in her performance style as she sways across the stage waving her arms and closing her eyes as like no one is in the room. This may not seem appealing or attractive in writing, but it’s charming in concert because you feel as if Tei Shi is dreaming her songs as she sings them. It is as if her tracks are a forest surrounding her with trees, leaves, and gusts of wind that carry sounds of both her nightmares and visions. I say nightmares because songs like, “How Far” and “Keep Running” carry a bass- line that stomps like the heavy foot of an inner monster while other songs such as “Say You Do” feel like wisps of wind filled with swishing synths. Either way you get the sense that Tei Shi’s music comes from her heart in that they never lose elements of sensuality and self discovery. I know sensuality is always associated with sexuality, but I always use a term in association with the beauty of finding your spirit. Such a search explains the urgency and wonder that fills her songs and presence on stage. In concert. Tei Shi is like a seeker in which her voice is a beacon of searching light.
Tei Shi – Keep Running

Vocally, Tei Shi is an odd mix of simplicity and sporadic grandeur. She holds the mic to her like it is a cuddle buddy, and sing softly into it as it is her lyrics were mental streams meant to be spewed clearly and straightly. Then she breaks out into rocking yelps and high-pitched coos that could break glass ceilings and release shattered crystal shapes. She never loses her capacity to be piercing but divides it between lulling annotations and in your face vocal plays. When you match her hypnotic voice with the electro backdrop of her music you feel like you are listening to a virtual-meditation guru. Although she brings an ease to the stage, she can give a rise out of her listeners with just a flick of her voice. Overall, her performance gave an excitement for her future which can be the best result for of an upcoming artist’s concert. No one can say that they walked out of Ludlow House without full faith that Tei Shi will go on to bigger venues and even bigger versions of herself. Someone who is so intrigued by their inner heartbeat has the power to captivate through a musical one. For More Information Tei Shi Click Here.
